in the sleepy-warm space
between spring and summer
has long since grown old
(yet i sill manage it over and over)

the sun brings freckles as
a warm welcome and
i swear i would kiss them
all if i could

i make more promises than i

and forget more birthdays

i can't tell if it's better
to spend another night
under the stars with a bottle
of Jamaican taquilla
or sit up to still pretend i'm with you
(i hope i never am)

i open my mouth it
threatens to spill out;
choking thoughts down
has become a past-time

the dirty orange of
streetlights is never brighter
than when everything
outside the window is
